"The largest cemetery in Berlin - 'In den Kisseln'"

As I stayed for some days in autumn 2012 in Berlin, I visited the cemetery "In den Kisseln" in Berlin-Spandau. This cemetery is the largest one in Berlin. It was opened in 1886. One of the currently buried persons is Thomas Dörflein, a zoo keeper, the "father" of the well-known icebear Knut.

Nearby to our holiday village Rendbjerg is the comunity of Rinkenaes. In Rinkenaes there are 2 churches. One older one, known as one of the oldest in Denmark, the other one is new (built in 1932). Here are the pics from the newer one with the stepped gable tower.

As we visited some friends in and aorund Kiel we stayed an afternoon at the beach near Laboe. You can see a lot of Cruise Liners and Container Ships on their shipping channel from Kiel to the Baltic Sea.

"Today a hospital - 350 years ago a palace"

Augustenborg Palace is a Rococo-style palace in the southwestern part of Augustenborg, Als Island, Denmark, overlooking Augustenborg Fjord. The palace owes its name to Duchess Auguste. The original half-timbered manor house was built in 1660-4 by Ernest Günther. The largest room in the castle was the church hall, which dates from the late 18th century. In Broager, between Sonderborg and Krusa, there is Denmarks only 2-towered church. Around this nice building it is the cemetery and a monument to remember the Broager victims of World War 1. In Nybol there is a little church with cemetery which I visited later that day.

The Battle of Dybbøl (Danish: Slaget ved Dybbøl) was the key battle of the Second Schleswig War and occurred on the morning of 18 April 1864 following a siege starting on 7 April. Denmark suffered a severe defeat against the German Confederation, which decided the war. During the battle around 3,600 Danes and 1,200 Prussians were either killed, wounded or disappeared. On the field of Dybbøl were formerly national symbols of both warring sides: the Danish Dybbøl Mill and the German Düppeldenkmal. The Protestant Church of the Redeemer (German: Heilandskirche) is located in the south of the village of Sacrow, which since 1939 is incorporated to Potsdam, the capital of the German Bundesland of Brandenburg. It is famous for its Italian Romanesque Revival architecture with a separate campanile (bell tower) and for its localization. It has been built in 1844.

We flew from his base Rastatt via Karlsruhe to Bruchsal and my hometown Ubstadt. My wife was waiting in the garden and waved. We finished our flight at the small airport in Bruchsal.

The Berlin 1939-1945 Commonwealth Cemetery was established in 1945 at the Heerstraße The majority of those interred there were members of the Royal Air Force who fell during attacks on Berlin, alongside British soldiers who died in captivity in Germany and some civilian members of the post-1945 British occupation forces. As well as Britons, there are soldiers from other Commonwealth realms, soldiers of unknown nationalities and five Poles. In total there are 3.576 graves in the cemetery.
